Shin-chan’s first game

Crayon Shin-chan is one of Japan’s biggest comedy franchises: Yoshito Usui’s manga started in 1990 and the anime in 1992. This April 1993 Bandai cart, made by TOSE, is the first Crayon Shin-chan video game of any kind, about a year after the anime began and ahead of the Famicom game that August.

The title means “Me and Shiro Are Friends!”, and it is a Shiro story: four everyday stages of going shopping for his mom Misae, the kindergarten trip, walking Shiro, and then hunting for Shiro after Shin-chan loses him. In between come minigames: an Action Kamen whack-a-mole, Darumasan ga Koronda (Japan’s red-light-green-light), a tricycle race, and a find-Shiro game using clues from his friends. Collect Chocobi snacks for extra tries.

Famitsu’s reviewers liked that it felt like Shin-chan and liked the minigames, and wished it had passwords: there is no save and no continues, so you play it start to finish, arcade style.

Little to read

The Japanese is stage titles and minigame instructions; the play explains itself. If you met Shin-chan through Shin-chan: Shiro and the Coal Town on Switch, this is where Shin-chan games began, with Shiro front and center even then.

More Japanese kids’ TV on Game Boy: Chibi Maruko-chan and Doraemon.
