Ultraman, super-deformed
Ultraman is one of Japan’s great pop-culture institutions: Tsuburaya’s Ultra Series has run since Ultra Q in 1966, and in 2013 Guinness recognized it for spawning the most spin-off TV shows. In the late 80s Bandai launched Ultraman Club, a games series with the Ultra Brothers drawn super-deformed (chibi) and fighting armies of classic kaiju. It ran mostly on the Famicom, and this May 1990 cart is its only Game Boy entry.
The title, Teki Kaijū o Hakken Seyo!, means “Locate the Enemy Monsters!”, written in an old-fashioned military-telegram style. The series started as RPGs; this one is a strategy game.
About the Japanese
It is a strategy game with Japanese menus and no English version, so expect some trial and error. The Ultra Series is still going (Netflix’s Ultraman: Rising, 2024), and this is a small piece of its 1990 merchandise boom, the kind of cart tokusatsu fans like to have on the shelf.
The rest of my Game Boy stock is on the Game Boy shelf.
