The sequel the West never got
The first Game Boy Tamagotchi was a hit, so Bandai had a sequel out four months later, in October 1997, this time in a bright yellow cartridge. Tamagotchi 2 never left Japan.
It goes outdoors. You get a map to walk around, a player character named Mikachu, egg-hunting, and two new kinds of pet raised side by side: forest bugs (Mushitchi) and sea fish (Sakanatchi). A cryo-sleep option pauses growth, and with a second cart and a link cable you can trade pets.
The game came before the toys
Japanese Wikipedia credits this game with introducing the bug and fish Tamagotchi, which Bandai then released as real toys, Mori de Hakken!! Tamagotchi (forest) and Umi de Hakken!! Tamagotchi (sea), the following February.
About the Japanese
More Japanese than the first game, with a map and a light story layer and no English version; the raising loop is familiar if you have played any Tamagotchi. It gets enhancements on a Super Game Boy. A cheerful gift for a Tamagotchi fan.
Its white-cartridge predecessor, Game de Hakken!! Tamagotchi, has an English version and was the 1.45-million-shipping original.
