Doraemon, times-table tutor
Every Japanese schoolchild learns multiplication as kuku (九九), a chanted table recited until it sticks (“ni ni ga shi”, two twos are four). Study Boy 3: Kuku Master is a Game Boy cart built to drill it, with Doraemon, the blue robot cat from the future, as your tutor. It is the third of six Game Boy Study Boy carts, from Shogakukan, Doraemon’s own publisher.
Doraemon is a giant in Asia: Fujiko F. Fujio’s manga began in 1969, has sold over 300 million copies worldwide, and in 2008 Japan’s Foreign Ministry named Doraemon its first “anime ambassador”.
A slice of Japanese school life
This is a schoolkid’s study aid in cartridge form, and a cheerful thing to own if you collect Doraemon or unusual Game Boy software. Do not confuse it with the later Game Boy Color Study Boy: Kanji Yomikaki Master, a famous rarity.
