Just Joe, no league
A licensing artifact from before Sega had the NFL: this cart is Montana-namesake-only. Sega reportedly signed the Hall-of-Fame quarterback to a roughly $1.7 million deal to put his name on the box, but there’s no NFL or NFLPA license - so no real team names and no other real players. It’s the simpler 8-bit original that predates the bigger, talkier sequel, Joe Montana II: Sports Talk Football on the Genesis, the one that added real-time voice commentary. This is where the line started.
