Ecco is Ed Annunziata’s cult series (developed by Novotrade, published by Sega), and this Game Gear release is a distinct, heavily reworked handheld cut - some levels and scenes were trimmed to fit the hardware. It’s a dolphin game with no business being this atmospheric or this strange, and it’s aged into something of an ancestor of Abzu-style underwater exploration games. Newly relevant, too: in April 2026 the reunited original team announced “Ecco the Dolphin: Complete,” a compilation of every version of the first two games. A good time to have the pocket cut on the shelf.
