This is a complete-in-box copy of Disney’s Aladdin for the Sega Genesis - the genuine Sega clamshell case, the full-color box art, and the cartridge, all together. The cartridge is powered on, tested, and its contacts cleaned; the case and art are in excellent shape (box and cartridge, no manual). Because this is a one-of-a-kind item, the exact copy in these photos is what you’ll receive - I’ve shot it from every angle so there are no surprises.

The game Disney literally helped draw

Genesis Aladdin isn’t just a movie tie-in - it’s one of the most technically impressive games on the system. Disney sent ten of its own feature animators to hand-draw every character sprite (around 1,500 frames) at their Florida studio, and Virgin’s team compressed that film-quality animation onto a Genesis cartridge with a custom process they called “Digicel.” It was coded largely by David Perry and a crew that would go on to found Shiny Entertainment and make Earthworm Jim. It paid off: the Genesis version sold around 4 million copies - roughly double the rival SNES version - and it still looks gorgeous.

The one with the sword

If you know the great Genesis-vs-SNES Aladdin debate, this is the Genesis one - the version where Aladdin actually swings a scimitar (the Capcom SNES game had him jumping on enemies instead). Even Shinji Mikami, who designed that SNES version and later created Resident Evil, admitted that if he hadn’t made his own he’d “probably buy” this one, for the sword and the better animation. The audio is a showpiece too: Virgin’s Tommy Tallarico pushed the Genesis sound chip to sample real instruments and voices, turning the Academy Award-winning film score into some of the best sound on the console.

A relic of the video-rental era

Here’s the fun part: this copy spent its first life as a rental. The original video-store sticker is still on the back - it reads “Gahanna Video, 93 N. Stygler Rd, Gahanna OH 43230.” Some of the sticker’s tamper-evident features have triggered over the years, so it’s a little hard to read now, but that’s part of the charm - this cartridge was rented out of a real Ohio video store back when renting is how you test-drove a game. I’ve left the label on for authenticity. If you’d rather it be gone, just ask and I’ll fully remove the label and any residue before shipping; otherwise it ships exactly as pictured.
