Yu Yu Hakusho, while the manga was still running
Yoshihiro Togashi’s Yu Yu Hakusho, from the creator of Hunter x Hunter, ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1990 to 1994 and won the Shogakukan Manga Award. This cart, Dai San Dan: Makai no Tobira Hen (“Part 3: The Door to the Demon World”), came out in June 1994, about seven weeks before the manga’s final chapter. It is the third of Tomy’s four Game Boy Yu Yu Hakusho games and never left Japan.
The Sensui arc, on a Game Boy
It adapts the Sensui arc, the one English-speaking fans usually call “Chapter Black”, all the way to Shinobu Sensui as the final boss, fought twice in a row. Exploration alternates with side-on action fights, and you switch between Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama and Hiei, who level up as you go: Kurama is the only one who can double-jump, Hiei dashes, Kuwabara is slow with a special aerial attack. It is a cart for fans of that arc, and the franchise is very much alive, with Netflix’s 2023 live-action series.
About the Japanese
The fighting needs no reading. Story, hints and the password screen are Japanese, and it saves by password, so there is no battery inside to die.
Another Shōnen Jump cart in the shop: Magical Taruruuto-kun.
