The other Game Boy F1 game

Ask about Formula One on the Game Boy and most people name Nintendo’s F-1 Race. F1 Boy came out in Japan on September 28, 1990, about six weeks before it, and has nothing to do with it. It reached Europe a couple of years later renamed SunSoft Grand Prix, and never came to the US.

Very little has been written about it. Game Boy historian Jeremy Parish, covering it in his Game Boy Works series, called it “quite well-made”: selectable difficulty, race length and car setups, and computer cars that race you without rubber-banding. His theory is that Nintendo’s game simply buried it, which makes this a nice find for anyone who thinks they have played every Game Boy racer.

Plenty of sites mix it up with F-1 Race. It is not the Japanese version of that game.

No Japanese needed

It is a racing game with menus, region-free, and plays on anything. More Game Boy carts and consoles are on the Game Boy shelf.
