Fifteen events, two players, one light gun
Track & Field II is Konami’s 1989 follow-up, built for the 1988 Seoul Olympics year (in Japan it was called Konami Sports in Seoul). It is a lot more than running and jumping. Fence, fight taekwondo, dive, throw the hammer, pole vault, shoot clay pigeons, paddle a canoe, then try the exhibition events: hang gliding and a pistol range.
The pistol range takes the NES Zapper (“a gun system or a joypad,” per the manual), set up as a “simulated F.B.I. training course” with artificial gangster targets. The Zapper only works on an old CRT TV, but the event plays fine on a controller.
Built for two people
The best part is head-to-head: fencing, taekwondo and arm wrestling in VS. mode, plus swimming and hurdles side by side, on one cart with two controllers. Olympic mode runs eight days with a password after each, so progress survives without a battery. It entered Nintendo Power’s Top 30 at #5 when it came out.
Don’t mix it up with Nintendo’s World Class Track Meet, which needs the Power Pad mat; this one plays on a standard controller. Track Meet comes on the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt/Track Meet three-in-one if you have a Power Pad.
Every copy is opened, cleaned and tested by playing, in the grade you pick on my condition scale. The Good copy has a previous owner’s “W” carved into the back of the shell.
