Yu-Gi-Oh!, before the cards
Early Yu-Gi-Oh! was not only about cards. The manga had all kinds of games, and one was Capsule Monster Chess: monster figurines from capsule-toy machines fighting on a tiled board. Before Duel Monsters took over the franchise, Konami built games on that idea, and Monster Capsule GB (April 2000) is the Game Boy one, the follow-up to Japan’s very first Yu-Gi-Oh! video game, Monster Capsule: Breed & Battle on PlayStation.
It is a turn-based strategy RPG. Kaiba, under the Millennium Ring’s control, has trapped the souls of Yugi’s friends and grandfather, and Yugi climbs Kaiba’s Duel Tower floor by floor, each floor its own world with a familiar boss.
Japan-only for 25 years
It never got a Western release until Konami put it in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Early Days Collection (Switch and Steam, 2025), which Konami described as its first release outside Japan. This is the original cart.
About the Japanese
Story, quests and menus are Japanese. The label marks it Game Boy and Color compatible (ゲームボーイ＆カラー共通), so it plays on an original Game Boy as well as in color on a Color. The battery save is tested and replaced below 3.0 V.
The card-game side of the family is Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters II, a million-seller in Japan.
