Yoshi's Cookie (Game Boy, Japanese Import) - Authentic Nintendo Cartridge, Tested

Nintendo's 1992 cookie-sliding puzzler, and the Game Boy version plays up to four with the Four Player Adapter and a cart each. Japanese needed: none.

A puzzle game you fight on two fronts

Yoshi’s Cookie is Nintendo’s 1992 tile-matching puzzler, the same game you know with ヨッシーのクッキー on the label. Cookies pile in from the top and the side, and you slide whole rows and columns around like a Rubik’s Cube to clear a full line of one kind, with the Yoshi cookie as the wild card. Nintendo billed it as the follow-up to Yoshi no Tamago, part of its early-90s run of puzzle games alongside Tetris and Dr. Mario.

Four players, the Game Boy way

The Game Boy version can go to four players with the Four Player Adapter, each player on their own Game Boy with their own cart, with VS-mode chaos like PANIC! and BLIND. Famitsu scored it above the Famicom version, partly because nobody can see anyone else’s screen. Nintendo’s own Japanese page sells it on exactly that. (The SNES version is the one with Alexey Pajitnov’s puzzle levels.)

No Japanese at all

It is a puzzle game, with no save battery to worry about. A Yoshi game is an easy gift for a kid with a Game Boy, too.

Its predecessor, Yoshi no Tamago, is the puzzle game Game Freak made before Pokémon. Both are on the Game Boy shelf with the consoles to play them on.
