Japanese folklore, three RPGs deep
Momotarō Densetsu (“The Legend of Momotaro”) is Hudson’s RPG series built on Japanese folk tales: Momotaro the peach boy, Kintaro, Urashima Taro, Princess Kaguya. This 1991 Game Boy cart is a gaiden, a side story set after Momotaro Densetsu II, and it gives three supporting characters short RPGs of their own:
- The Poverty God (Binbōgami), whose battle attack is stealing your money.
- Yasha-hime, daughter of the King of Hell.
- Urashima Taro, the fisherman of the folk tale.
Series creator Akira Sakuma directed, and the music is by Kazuyuki Sekiguchi, bassist of the band Southern All Stars.
The Game Boy version came first
Hudson later ported it to the PC Engine (1992) and the Famicom (1993) and changed it along the way: different spells, dungeons and music, and Yasha-hime picks two of five companions here versus three of seven in the later versions. The PC Engine release was labeled “Volume 1” and promised a second volume that never came.
The Momotetsu connection
Japan knows this world best through Hudson’s spin-off, Momotaro Dentetsu, the railway board game (one letter apart: Densetsu is the RPG, Dentetsu the board game), where a Poverty God named Bonbī is the infamous villain. That series is still huge: Momotaro Dentetsu World on Switch debuted at #1 in Japan in 2023.
About the Japanese
It is a text-driven RPG and I have not found an English translation, so it is a cart for Japanese readers and Momotetsu fans who want the series' roots. The save battery is tested and replaced if it reads under 3.0 V.
Other Hudson carts in the shop: Bomberman GB and Daikaijuu Monogatari.
